My Angel, My Love

I can hear her singing.
Her hushed, mournful melody
Pierces everything within me,
Destroying everything that I’ve ever known.
All I remember now is her.

She sits alone in her cage,
Longing to fly,
But I have not the key
To set her free
From her prison,
Despite my longing to do so.

I hold on to the bars,
Staring in at her.
She closes her eyes,
And averts her gaze,
Unwilling to look at who
Keeps her unwillingly captive.
This was never what I wanted from her.

Although she continues to sing
Her endless reveries of freedom,
And although I continue to dream
Of holding her again,
The object of my affection,
My angel,
My love,
Has been locked away for so long,
Just out of my reach,
And I may never get her back
